Lumbee River EMC BESS Feasibility Study

Project Spotlight

Our team recently completed a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Feasibility Study for Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation. The study assessed the impact of integrating a 15 MW BESS into the cooperative's distribution system to enhance load management during peak demand.

Using advanced modeling tools like Milsoft’s WindMil and ETAP, we evaluated fault current, load flow, and transformer inrush behavior. Findings revealed a need for close-on-wave technology to meet IEEE 1547-2018 RVC standards due to transient voltage drops.

Transformer inrush can be a major concern for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) identified and evaluated during the interconnection feasibility study process, and at 15MW of capacity, this was a major consideration evaluated during this study resulting in recommendations of mitigation techniques.
